A brief history of St Mark's

Prior to October 1892 most of the present Parish of Wootton was included in the Parish of Arreton, where baptisms, marriages and funerals were performed.

The building was commenced in April 1909, when the Bishop of Southampton laid the foundation stone.  The builders were Messrs Jenkins who also built Quarr Abbey.  On August 29th 1909 the complete building was dedicated.

The organ chamber was added in 1913, but funds were insufficient , so an American organ was installed.

In 1925 a revision of Parish boundaries brought St Mark's into the Parish of Wootton along with St Edmund's.  Then after damage during the second world war, masonry cracks appeared.  The building fell into disrepair and was closed in 1946.

It became a furniture store and remained so until the Reverand George Rayner became Rector in 1969.

The Bishop of Portsmouth rededicated the church on Easter Day 1970.
